An Compassion of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Man I Had Just Met Supported Me Secure the Position That Changed My Life

In the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to the European continent with a companion. Since my companion was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had planned a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we got some food, sat down, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I did for a living, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – close to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I ought to seek a position with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The man from Iraq approached me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but straight off explained to my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where anything feels possible – she said: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his full name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the bravery or self-belief to reach out at an Ivy League university and request employment. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

What's more, that job in New York resulted in a job in Zurich where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
