Minister Says Ministry of Defence Examining Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, with Staff Advised to Refrain from Secret Talk in Cars.

A defense official has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the possible threats posed by Chinese cars, and staff have been told to avoid talking about secret information in all cars.

Safety Advice for MoD Personnel

In a recent appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to discuss secret material while riding in China-made cars.

He stated that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but noted that security is a concern in every modern vehicles.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified level in any kind of vehicle, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that exist in all automobile, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, the minister responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Wider Security Context

The announcement comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring chaos to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russia spy ship was reportedly shining lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.

The wider security situation underscores the importance of strong protocols and caution in all areas of official operations, from transport usage to communication practices.
